Same Guide, Same Jeep, Two Totally Different Stories
Colorado Jeep Tours runs four tours through the Royal Gorge region, but two of them consistently top the booking list: the Royal Gorge Half Day and the Red Canyon Half Day. Both are guide-led. Both are off-road. Both depart from the same office at 50905 W US HWY 50 in Cañon City.
And they look almost nothing alike.
If you are trying to decide between them, here is the honest breakdown.
The Royal Gorge Half Day: The Bridge, Fremont Peak, and 1,500 Feet of Elevation
The Royal Gorge Half Day runs approximately 3.5 hours and climbs over 1,500 vertical feet from Cañon City to Fremont Peak. The views from the top stretch from Pikes Peak in the northeast to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the southwest, with your guide putting every landmark in context.
On the return route, the tour passes dinosaur tracks over 100 million years old pressed into the bedrock above the city. Then comes the part that most guests bring up first when they describe the experience.
Colorado Jeep Tours is the only outside concessionaire permitted to drive across the Royal Gorge Bridge, a 1,260-foot span suspended 1,000 feet above the Arkansas River. Guests who book direct through coloradojeeptours.com receive complimentary Royal Gorge Bridge and Park admission after the tour, a value of up to $39, including the gondola, Visitor Center, hiking trails, and the bridge at their own pace.
Red Canyon: Where the Fossils Tell the Story
The Red Canyon Half Day runs approximately three hours and heads in a completely different direction than the Royal Gorge Half Day trip. The terrain here is built from Fountain Formation sandstone, the same geological layer that shaped the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, sculpted into towering red spires that rise sharply from the desert floor.
The 4×4 trail climbs from the valley floor through groves of junipers and cedars. Midway through, there is a short walk to Overlook Arch, a natural stone arch spanning high above Shaw Park. Then it is back into the Jeep, and that is where the story really starts.
The canyon you will be driving through sits at the edge of one of the most significant fossil sites in the country. Your guide has been telling the stories that shaped this landscape for years, and guests consistently say it is the part they did not see coming. The science is genuinely remarkable, the history behind it even more. A good guide knows exactly how to make both land.
That combination of knowledge, timing, and personality is something guests mention more than almost anything else when they describe the Red Canyon tour.
“Beautiful afternoon trip through the back country in Red Canyon and Skyline drive. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area. I would definitely recommend this tour.”
