The Only Way to Cross: Driving the Iconic Royal Gorge Bridge

A View You Cannot Get Any Other Way

Colorado Jeep Tours is the only outside concessionaire permitted to drive across the Royal Gorge Bridge, and we have been doing it since 2013

Most visitors walk the bridge. They look down at the Arkansas River, 1,000 feet below, and take the photo. It is a remarkable experience on foot. But there is a different kind of remarkable that happens when the Jeep crosses that span, with a guide narrating the canyon geology, the engineering history, and the stories built into every overlook along the way.

That is a view you cannot get any other way.

What the Royal Gorge Half Day Tour Covers

The Royal Gorge Half Day runs approximately 3.5 hours, departing twice daily at 8:30am and 1pm from the Cañon City office. From the moment you leave, the elevation starts to climb.

Your guide takes you up over 1,500 vertical feet to Fremont Peak, where the views stretch from Pikes Peak in the northeast to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the southwest. On a clear day, you can see for miles in every direction. Your guide will tell you exactly what you are looking at and why it matters.

On the return route, the tour passes dinosaur tracks over 100 million years old, pressed into the bedrock above the city. It is one of those moments that stops conversation. Then comes the bridge.

The Crossing

The Royal Gorge Bridge is 1,260 feet long, suspended 1,000 feet above the Arkansas River. Walking across it is one thing. Driving across it in an open-air Jeep, with a guide who has made this crossing hundreds of times and still finds something new to point out, is a different experience entirely.

Guests who book directly through coloradojeeptours.com receive complimentary Royal Gorge Bridge and Park admission after the tour, a value of up to $39. That includes the Visitor Center, the Theater, gondola rides, hiking trails, and the bridge at your own pace. One booking, two full experiences.

Built for Every Group

The Royal Gorge Half Day is one of Colorado Jeep Tours’ two top-selling experiences because it works for nearly every group. Families with young children, older travelers, couples, and guests experiencing Colorado for the first time all find something to hold onto here.

The open-air Jeeps are modified for comfort, with airbag suspension and cushioned seats. Easy entry, no hiking required. The tour runs between 5,300 and 7,200 feet in elevation, and dogs are welcome along for the ride.

Want the Full Experience?

If your group has the time, the Royal Gorge Full Day combines the Royal Gorge and Red Canyon tours into a single 7.5-hour adventure, with lunch included and the same complimentary bridge ticket. It departs once daily at 8:30am, year-round.

For combination adventures, Colorado Jeep Tours also offers packages pairing the Jeep tour with whitewater rafting, zip-lining over the gorge, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, and more.
