“Wined” up your motor for this scenic 75 mile round trip tour we call the Road to Riches followed by a wine tour at the Winery at the Holy Cross Abbey. This jeep excursion will start at an elevation of 5,500 feet and peak midway through the trip at just over 10,000 feet in the historic gold mining mountain towns of Victor and Cripple Creek. Known as America’s Greatest Gold Camp, these towns had over 500 mines which produced over 21 million ounces of gold exceeding the combined production of the California and Alaska Gold Rushes. The tour follows the old Cripple Creek and Florence Rail Road route which was built in 1894 and winds its way up through many abandon mines that will take you back in time as well as one state-of-the-art gold mining operation still operating today, the CC&V Gold Mining Company. The decent back will follow an old stage coach road which has been described by some as “a rough and rugged, back country, mountainous drive for the adventuresome.”
The Gold Belt Tour is more than just great way to get away from the city and experience 360 degrees of heart pounding views. Our dedicated and professional drivers will give interpretive talks about the history of the area and point out views like Window Rock, show you Indian petroglyphs, and keep a trained eye out for Colorado’s plentiful wildlife. One of the highlights of this Jeep excursion is stopping by Garden Park where fossil hunters and scientists have been digging for dinosaur remains since 1877. The Marsh and Cleveland Quarries in Garden Park are known for the first complete skeletons of Stegosaurus and Allosaurus which are now exhibited in the Denver Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.
On our way back after a fun filled day of amazing sites and colorful Colorado history, we will stop at the Winery at the Holy Cross Abbey. Along with a flight of Colorado’s best wines you will receive a variety of fruits and cheeses to cleanse your palette. Your wine tasting experience will be guided by one of the Abbey’s wine connoisseurs. This exclusive Colorado Jeep Tours affair is recommended for groups of four or more. If your group has less than four people, please check with our friendly reservationists. We may be able to still accommodate you. Children can enjoy juice, fruit and cheese.
